How to Make It and Is It Worth It?

Hi friends!

About a month or two ago, I found myself on “onion boil TikTok.” Yes, every single video I saw was just people making an onion boil, which I didn’t even know was a thing. Think: seafood boil but minus the seafood. It’s literally just an onion baked in butter and spices but my God, once I caved and made one for myself I had a food-critic-from-Ratatouille-trying-his-meal-for-the-first-time moment. If you aren’t familiar, here’s how to make it step by step:

What you’ll need:

  • Yellow onion
  • Tinfoil
  • Assortment of spices (I use paprika, cayenne pepper, old bay, creole seasoning, chili powder, garlic powder, parsley, and lemon pepper)
  • Butter

Step 1: Peel and Carve Out Middle of Onion

Not the entire middle – a nickel sized hole should do it. Make sure you don’t carve all the way through it – leave the bottom enclosed so nothing will fall through.

Step 1

Step 2: Stuff the Hole With Butter

Like, as much butter as you want. And when you think you’ve added enough, add more. Before you begin the next step, make sure your onion is on the piece of foil you’re going to bake it in.

Step 2

Step 3: Spice Up the Onion

Take all of the spices that you gathered before you started and sprinkle the bejeezus out of the onion. I’m talking drown that b!tch in all of those seasonings. You’re literally about to eat a butter soaked onion – now is NOT the time to worry about your health.

Step 3

Step 4: Melt Butter

Measure with your heart, we don’t judge here. The more butter you use = the soupier the end result will be (I like it diabolically soupy).

Step 4

Step 5: Mix Each Spice Into the Butter

All those spices that you drowned the onion with before? Yeah, do the same thing again, but this time to the butter you just melted.

Step 5

Step 6: Pour the Butter Onto the Onion

This one is pretty self explanatory. Make sure you flip up the edges of the foil before you do this!!!

Step 6

Step 7: Fold ‘Er Up!

Fold the foil up around the onion so that it’s completely enclosed and there is no butter leaking out. If you get a leak, add another layer of foil.

Step 7

Step 8: Bake the Onion

Bake the onion at 375° for 1 hour. Get ready, because your house is about to smell soooooo good!

Step 8

Step 9: Prepare and Enjoy!

Once your onion is out of the oven and has cooled for a minute, carefully unwrap it. I take 2 spoons or forks to transfer the onion to a bowl (it should be soft, mushy, and on the brink of falling apart) and then carefully pour the excess butter and seasoning on top. And from there, my friends, she’s all yours to enjoy!

Is It Worth the Hype?

In the 8 or so weeks it’s been since I first tried it, I’ve made it 6 times. So yes, it is, indeed, worth it. Be warned, however, it will get your tongue tingling and your nose running. If you’re like my fiancé and don’t like spicy food, you can make it with any other spices, really. I made him one with lemon pepper, a fresh squeezed lemon, seasoned salt, parsley, and garlic powder and it was just as delicious as the cajun style.

Also, this is a very easy recipe for those that suck at cooking (it’s me, I suck at cooking). What takes a normal person 10 minutes to prep takes me, like, 30, and I can do this fairly quickly, so it’s foolproof. Let me know if you wind up trying it for yourself – I guarantee you’ll love it!
